If you ever plan on coming to Spain, you are going to be eating lots and lots of tapas! Tapas are small plates or servings of food, usually breads and meats or cheese or vegetables. Tapas can consist of lots of different foods. Usually, tapas will come with the main food of choice and then will have a side of french fries (patatas) or chips. One of my favorite tapas to order at restaurants is solomillo al whiskey, which is tender pork covered in a whiskey sauce and paired with soften garlic cloves.
A popular food that Spaniards like to eat and that can be found in every store is the Spanish tortilla (tortilla espanñola). It is a thick omlette that is made with eggs and potatoes it is typical Spanish cuisine.
Spain is a very catholic country and every year during the first week of April, they celebrate Semana Santa (Holy Week). The traditional food of Semana Santa is the torrija. Torrijas are the Spanish version of french toast. I tasted some during Semana Santa and they were very sweet and soft.
These are just some of the many foods that make up Spanish cuisine. I think it's important to mention how much the Spaniards love their ham! If you order a tapa called jamón íberico in a tapas restaurant, you will be brought a small plate of sliced, cured ham. Additionally, if you come to Seville, you will see ham legs hanging on the walls and ceilings of grocery stores, restaurants, and stores where they only sell ham. I was a bit surprised the first time I saw this, but now I am used to seeing ham everywhere. It always reminds me that whenever I eat ham here it is definitely fresh!
